Back of case opens to reveal intricately engraved name "Walter H. Schang" on interior. The ongoing rivalry between the AL Philadelphia Athletics and the NL New York Giants was showcased once again in the 1913 World Series. The Giants and A's had previously battled for the title in 1905 and 1911 with each team capturing one championship. The 1913 Series was anticipated to be one of the most hotly contested since the game's inception in 1903. Ultimately the A's bested the Giants in five games to take the World Series "rubber match". Among the catalysts for the Athletics title run of 1913 was emerging rookie catcher Wally Schang. Schang was discovered by George Stallings in 1912, when he played in the sandlots of upstate New York for the Buffalo Pullmans. Schang's fast start to his major league career was no mere fluke. Schang would be a winner almost everywhere he played, appearing in the World Series six times during his career that included stints with the A's, Red Sox, Browns, Yankees and Tigers. See a Picture of this Item 248e Roger Bresnahan's 1928 New York Giants professional model cap. Roger Bresnahan's contemporaries recalled that he could play all nine positions as well as any player in the game including pitcher, the position with which he began his major league career. However, he eventually moved to catcher and was ultimately labeled one of the best to ever play that position by managers John McGraw and Branch Rickey. While playing for the Giants from 1902-1908, Bresnahan was one of several players who became a close friend of John McGraw, with whom he shared notable physical and personality traits. Compact, pugnacious, temperamental, fiercely concentrated on the game, and skilled in all the ways it takes to play, it was a natural transition for Bresnahan to move into the role of manager and coach after his playing career ended in 1916. After owning and managing his hometown Toledo Mud Hens through 1923, Bresnahan re-joined the New York Giants as a coach from 1925-28. The offered cap dates to that period. The white wool pinstriped cap features a blue bill and classic embroidered interlocking "NY" on the front. A Spalding manufacturer's stamp appears on the inside headband. A photocopy of an image of Bresnahan taken in 1928 shows him wearing what appears to be this very cap, identifiable by the unique alignment of the pinstriping in relation to the "NY" and the seams. Interestingly, the name "Jackson" is written on the interior in vintage black ink, suggesting the possibility that the cap was also worn at one time by Giants Hall of Famer Travis Jackson. The cap shows moderate soiling and usage wear throughout, yet retains outstanding display quality. The cap is an exceptional rarity with regard to its style and era alone, and is further enhanced by Bresnahan family provenance. The cap originates from the nephew of Roger Bresnahan, and includes his letter of provenance. Also includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) DNS

Highly desirable rendering of the St. Mary's Industrial School baseball team c.1910-12 features a young player by the name of George Herman Ruth. Ruth had developed into a superb baseball player under the guidance of Brother Mathias at the reform school where he was placed at the age of seven. The photo measures 6"x9" and has been laid down on a thick stock photo board. Ruth is pictured in the center of the top row wearing catcher's equipment and holding a spider style mask and mitt. The offered image is the first example of this particular view that we have encountered, and varies distinctly from another well documented image picturing the 1912 Champion "Red Sox" team of St. Mary's. The back of the photo board is inscribed in period pencil notations to include, "Babe Ruth catcher on 'Red Sox' 1910 Champions...Ruth top center, Tom Padgett left end bottom row". Stamped by the "File Dept. at the New York World" along with a printing date of "8/10/20". Based on the image quality, printing date, and image format, it is our belief that the offered photograph was likely printed in the late teens or in fact 1920 itself. Obviously, with a print date of 8/10/20 it can be no later than 1920, but could certainly have been printed earlier and then re-printed at a later date as is often seen on news file photographs. Photo quality remains quite nice given the dating and original image quality with a small corner chip at the top right. Significant Babe Ruth image dating to his very earliest baseball playing days: VG-EX ($1,500.00-$2,000.00) $3,100.00

The reverse of the photo bears the period stamping, "Photo by L. Van Oeyen Cleveland, O" along with a period fountain pen notation, "July 1927 L to R Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth". The photo includes a detailed three page analysis report from noted photographic conservator Paul Messier confirming the silver gelatin original image and its printing on photographic paper consistent with the 1920-30s era. With regard to composition, clarity, contrast, dating period, photographer, and rare size format, the offered image must be acknowledged as one of the finest original photographs of Ruth and Gehrig extant.
