Description: Photograph of new Shibe Park c.1909. 6 1/2"x3 1/2" photo captures the newly built Shibe Park in Philadelphia. A stamp appears on the back of the photo from Gilliams Press Syndicate as well as the pencil notation "Philadelphia Athletics new baseball park". The photo shows excellent clarity and overall image quality. Small sections are missing from the bottom left border and upper left corner and a few light creases are evident. After abandoning Columbia Park, the Philadelphia Athletics opened Shibe Park on April 12, 1909. It was Major League Baseball's first steel-and-concrete stadium. The park was first called Shibe Park, for Benjamin Shibe, who was one of the initial owners along with Connie Mack. Mr. Mack eventually acquired full ownership, but maintained the original name. The park was renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953 in honor of Mr. Mack, who by then was known as "The Grand Old Man of Baseball": VG-EX
