See a Picture of this Item 301 Thurman Munson professional model fielder's glove c.1969-71. Zoilo Versailles MacGregor model GS4 fielder's glove used by Thurman Munson exhibits heavy use including pocket wear and general game use. "15" is written twice in period black marker on the back of the glove near the backstrap and on the exterior pinky finger. "Muntz" is also written in period black marker on the back of the glove. Based on the labeling, and the potential manufacture date range, we can narrow the dating to the 1966 to 1968 period. Munson did play a moderate number of games (60) in various fielding positions, including right field and first base, for which he would have used a similar glove. It is also possible that he used the offered glove while playing at Kent State where he did wear the #15 uniform. Very rare example of a Thurman Munson game used glove with impeccable and uncommon primary source provenance. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX ($5,000.00-$7,500.00) $5,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 302 Unique Thurman Munson handmade catcher's mitt interior protectant c.1970s. Interesting linen tape coated hard shell protectant measuring approx. 4" long. The piece was designed and used by Munson on the interior of his catcher's mitt to protect his hand during the games in which he was catching for a particularly hard throwing pitcher. The padding exhibits game use including surface soiling. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: VG ($200.00-$300.00) $600.00

See a Picture of this Item 303 Rare 1974 Thurman Munson Gold Glove Award. While Thurman Munson's accolades and accomplishments are often in relation to his clutch hitting and clubhouse leadership, defensive play was never a liability for Thurman. Along with Carlton Fisk and Johnny Bench, Thurman Munson was regarded as one of the finest defensive backstops of his era. Munson's impressive career defensive statistics clearly illustrate his prowess behind the plate in an everyday role for eleven years: .982 lifetime fielding percentage, 6253 putouts, and only 127 errors in nearly 1,300 career games. One of the legendary stories relating to Thurman's defensive career occurred during the 1971 season, in which he committed only one single error. As unbelievable as the statistic is, this error was not executed on a routine passed ball or errant throw, but because a runner knocked Thurman unconscious at home plate dislodging the ball. Munson was bestowed with the pinnacle of defensive accolades, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, for three consecutive American League seasons, from 1973 through 1975. The offered award dates to the 1974 season in which Munson was the starting catcher in the All-Star game. The award itself measures an imposing 16" tall by 18" long. Wooden pedestal style trophy base features applied brass placards with image of Munson and titling. Retains crossed bat supports holding two gold painted baseballs. Trademark Rawlings gold painted "Major League" model catcher's mitt resides in the center. The award remains in fine original condition with the titled brass placard at the bottom showing some minor oxidation and having slightly lowered in stance in relation to the base. It is interesting to note that although nine players for each league were presented with Gold Glove awards, eight awards were created with fielder's gloves to every catcher's mitt, the latter of which are far rarer. Additionally, with regard to player quality, catching ability, and status within the history of the game, Thurman Munson's award may well be the pinnacle of catcher's Gold Gloves that one could attain. One of the most significant player Gold Glove awards to have entered the collecting marketplace from the personal collection of Thurman Munson. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX-MT ($30,000.00-$40,000.00) $45,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 304 Thurman Munson's 1979 professional model baseball bat with its original Hillerich & Bradsby Co. shipping box and receipt from his final bat order. Thurman Munson Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 35" long and weighs 32oz. Model #S44 is stamped above Munson's facsimile signature on the barrel, both of which remain very bold. The bat exhibits no game use. Included with the bat is the original (12) count baseball bat box shipped from Louisville Slugger to the New York Yankees. The box is addressed to Yankee Stadium with "New York Yankees" stenciled in black above a black marker "Munson" on one end. The lot also includes the original shipping receipt from Hillerich & Bradsby indicating shipment of (12) Thurman Munson pro model bats at 35" long and 32oz. The words, "Sent Home" are written in pencil at the top left of the receipt. It is unclear who may have written the notation. Tragically, the receipt is marked with a "Ship Date" from the factory of 7/30/79, which was just two days before Thurman Munson's accident. The other (11) bats from the original box were either given away by the Munson family over the years or retained for the family collection. The offered example is the first and only Thurman Munson professional model bat from his final shipment to have entered the collecting marketplace. The characteristics of this bat are in stark and telling contrast to a typical Munson game used bat, which usually exhibits heavy wear and pine tar residue. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (bat) and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: Bat: NM, Box: GD, Receipt: VG ($1,500.00-$2,500.00) $2,250.00

Has some typical light usage wear remaining fairly clean overall. The offered chair was given to Munson by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX ($4,000.00-$6,000.00) $6,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 305 Important 1978 Thurman Munson presentational New York Yankees World Series trophy. The Yankees franchise has seen eleven team captains, a relatively small figure by any measure. However, considering the number of potential team captains, which could include dozens of star and Hall of Fame caliber players, such as Mantle, DiMaggio, Ford, Berra, Jackson, and so on, the number eleven seems impossibly small. In 1935, Lou Gehrig assumed the role of captain for the New York Yankees. Gehrig was finally able to step out of the shadow of Babe Ruth, who departed after the 1934 season. Tragically, Gehrig relinquished the post after passing away in 1941, leaving a void that would go unfilled for thirty five seasons. Through all of the great Yankees teams of the 1940-60s, there would be no captain. Upon entering the 1976 season, Yankees principal owner, George Steinbrenner, decided that Thurman Munson would be named team captain, the first since Lou Gehrig. The announcement was confirmation of what peers and fans already knew, that the Yankees were Thurman's team. He was its leader. As if on cue, Munson immediately assumed the role, leading the Yankees to the 1976 AL Championship for the first time since 1962. Subsequently, Munson led the Yankees to two World Championships in both 1977 and 1978. Following the 1978 World Series, in which the Yankees defeated the Dodgers in what would be Munson's final World Championship, Thurman made a request of owner George Steinbrenner. As captain, Munson asked that a replica of the World Series trophy be made for his collection instead of a ring. Mr. Steinbrenner generously obliged and indicated that Thurman would also receive a ring, which he did. According to Diana Munson, a large packaged case arrived at the Munson's Ohio home in November of 1978. This "package" contained trophy itself, housed in a custom made travel case. Diana recalls that, "Thurman opened the case and saw the trophy which literally brought him to tears. He was so proud of the team's accomplishment and felt honored to be the captain. His appreciation for both the team and Mr. Steinbrenner could not be measured in words." The trophy itself stands a substantial 24" in height atop a custom made velvet lined plinth measuring 8" tall for a total display height of 32" and weighs an impressive 43 1/2 pounds. Exacting replica of the New York Yankees actual 1978 World Series trophy has (26) team flags surrounding a baseball (dated 1978), crown, and Yankees and Dodgers press pin facades. Brass band at the base reads "To Thurman Munson Captain of the 1978 World Champion New York Yankees". The names of all the team players, coaches, and front office staff are also impressed in black lettering on the brass band. The trophy remains in nearly pristine original condition having been carefully preserved by the Munson family. The lot includes the trophy's original handled carrying case with multiple locking latches along with its original L.G. Balfour Co. receipt dated 11/3/78 noting that the case itself cost over $400.00 to produce in 1978. While difficult to quantify the significance of the offered trophy, it is not unreasonable to claim that it is one of the most important of its type ever manufactured. Furthermore, with respect to size, visual display qualities, player significance, team affiliation, and provenance, it could be suggested that this trophy is in fact the finest of its type to have ever been offered publicly. Absolutely stunning baseball artifact which must been viewed in person to gain a full appreciation. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: NM-MT (Estimate Upon Request) $180,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 309 1976 Thurman Munson auto. professional model baseball bat. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat measures 35" long and weighs 30.4oz. The bat shows evident use incl. cleat marks, ball marks, and pine tar residue on the handle. Model #M169 is stamped on the barrel end above Munson's facsimile signature and alongside desirable 1976 Centennial logo stampings. Barrel of the bat has been autographed, "To Dave Best Wishes Thurman Munson" in black marker rating 10 out of 10. The barrel is also signed, "To Dave Best Wishes Jim Catfish Hunter" and "Ken Holtzmann" both in black marker. The bat includes a notarized letter of provenance from the original recipient who claims to have received the bat directly from Munson while the recipient was visiting with Catfish Hunter who had been an acquaintance. Both the knob and barrel ends have a "2" written in period black marker which has also been "colored" over in period black marker. As Sandy Alomar wore #2 for the Yankees, it is likely that he used the offered bat. Because bats were commonly used by other players, it is possible Thurman Munson may have also used the offered bat, although we cannot be certain. In either case, the desirability of the 1976 Centennial stamped bat coupled with the notable rarity of Munson autographed game bats places this example within the upper echelon of Munson related game bats. Includes LOA's from Hunt Auctions (bat) and JSA (autographs) along with the notarized letter of provenance from the original recipient: EX ($10,000.0-$15,000.00) DNS

See a Picture of this Item 321 1986 New York Mets World Series replica trophy. Fine quality replica trophy produced by Balfour in commemoration of the Mets 1986 World Championship. Standing a full 25" tall, these full sized replica trophies were produced in far fewer quantities than the miniature versions (12" tall) more often seen in the marketplace. After an eleven-year hiatus, the Boston Red Sox finally returned to the Fall Classic in 1986, determined to shake the "Curse of the Bambino" once and for all. The New York Mets were making their third World Series appearance, having totaled 108 regular season wins while finishing a whopping 21 1/2 games ahead of their nearest competition. The Mets boasted a standout pitcher in Dwight Gooden who had fueled the National League much like his counterpart Roger Clemens had against the American League. The impending showdown on the mound dominated the hype, but in the end the dramatic seven game series may best be remembered for Buckner's folly and the perpetuation of the dreaded ôcurse": NM-MT ($7,500.00-$10,000) $10,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 323 1972 Willie Mays New York Mets home jersey. Pinstriped knit jersey retains its original "Mets" team name on the front with #24 on the back. "42 72 24" size/year/number is chain stitched onto a strip tag inside the collar. Rawlings tag remains affixed onto the interior tail front area. The jersey itself exhibits excellent use and wash wear including slight puckering to the team name and numbers. Back of the shirt and collar show some typical light areas of soiling along with some usage soiling to the right sleeve. The #24 on the back has similar wash wear in addition to some noticeable surface scratching. This was due to Mays' tendency to scratch his back on the cinder block wall within the interior of the Shea Stadium dugout and has been confirmed as such by Mays. New York Mets logo remains affixed to the left sleeve. The jersey is signed across the front by Mays in black sharpie. Based on comparisons to a period color photograph picturing Willie Mays in a New York Mets home jersey on the front cover of the May 22, 1972 issue of Sports Illustrated, it appears that the image is an exact photo match of the offered shirt. Willie Mays completed his illustrious 22 year career with the 1973 Mets and is regarded by many historians to be the finest overall player in Major League history. Although Mays capped off his career with the New York Mets in 1972 and 1973, his stature as one the game's greatest players still carried enormous weight and drew fans in New York, the city where Mays began his career. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions (jersey), LOA from JSA (autograph), and a copy of the original May 22, 1972 Sports Illustrated picturing Mays wearing the offered jersey: EX ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $10,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 355 Mickey Mantle 1965 Fred Hutchinson Award from Mantle estate. After a solid pitching career with the Detroit Tigers, Fred Hutchinson managed in Detroit, St. Louis, and Cincinnati, until his bout with cancer forced him to retire. When Hutchinson died at the age of 45, he was voted Most Courageous Athlete by the Baseball Writers Association. His inspirational career continues to be remembered through the annual presentation of the Fred Hutchinson Award. The offered Fred Hutchinson Award was presented to Mickey Mantle for his exemplification of Hutchinson's beloved character. Mantle was notoriously cynical about such laurels, but in his book "The Mick," Mantle notably reflected on his appreciation for this particular award stating, "I've often thought that a lot of awards you get are made-up deals so you'll come to the dinners. Of course, there are others that have merit. I won the first Fred Hutchinson Award. It's for courage. He was a pitcher, and, later a manager in the majors. He had cancer, but he never let us feel sorry for him. He made us feel good just because we knew him. I truly appreciate that award. It's one of my favorites.ö 16"x20" heavy chrome plaque bears the likeness of Fred Hutchinson with Mantle's name etched just below it. Includes a letter of provenance from the Mantle family: EX-MT ($2,500.00-$3,500.00) $12,000.00

Interior is signed by Mantle, Yankees General Manager Ralph Houk, and AL President Joe Cronin with each signature rating 9/10 out of 10. Although certainly not one of Mantle's "best" seasons, 1966 would have been a fine campaign for most players with a batting average of .288, 23 home runs, 96 RBI's and 96 hits in just 108 games played. One of only a handful of original Mantle player contracts to have entered the marketplace. See a Picture of this Item 363 Roger Maris, Sal Durante, and Tracy Stallard autographed baseball c.1961. In reflecting on the campaign to break Babe Ruth's single season home run record, Roger Maris declared that, "As a ballplayer, I would be delighted to do it again. As an individual, I doubt if I could possibly go through it again." The 1961 season was a unique combination of angst and joy for Roger Maris. Although it was expected that teammate Mickey Mantle would be the player to eclipse Babe Ruth's hallowed record of 60 home runs in a season, it turned out to be Maris who hammered 61 home runs to set the new mark. On October 1, 1961, in a game played against the Boston Red Sox, Roger Maris connected for his record setting 61st home run of the season. Tracy Stallard was the pitcher for the Red Sox. The ball was caught by truck driver Sal Durante, who famously tried to return the ball to Maris. Maris refused, insisting that Durante sell the ball to make some money, which he eventually did for $5,000. That baseball now resides in the Hall of Fame. The offered baseball is the first of its type that we have encountered and was amazingly signed in the period by all three key figures: Maris, Durante, and Stallard. Maris and Stallard signatures rate 8 out of 10 with Durante rating 6 out of 10. The ball itself is a cream color Cronin AL baseball with light age wear. The baseball was originally awarded as a prize at the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle and to our knowledge is the only surviving example of its type.
