See a Picture of this Item 203 1909 World Series game used baseball. Toned red and blue stitched National League baseball inscribed as being used in Game #2 of the 1909 World Series played in Pittsburgh on Oct. 8, 1909. Ball has been inscribed as such and is signed by numerous members of the Pirates and Tigers many of which have faded from aging. Visible signatures include Donie Bush and Chas. O'Leary. "World Series", "Pitt. vs. Detroit Oct. 8, 1909", and "To My Friend..." notations are clearly legible. Ball was obtained in 1926 from the travelling secretary of the Pittsburgh Pirates who had befriended the head cashier of the Sinton Hotel in Cincinnati at which the baseball teams used to stay during the season. The ball includes a letter of provenance from the nephew of the hotel cashier. Rare game used ball from a classic early 20th century World Series: VG ($2,000.00-$3,000.00) $1,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 204 Significant 1909 World Series Game #6 Final Out Baseball. Official B.Johnson AL baseball with uncommon "1909" dating stamp which was the final ball in play during Game #6 of the 1909 World Series at Detroit. The ball originated from the collection of former Detroit Tiger and Major League umpire George Moriarity. Period ink inscriptions in Moriarity's hand on the ball read as follows, "Last Ball in Play Detroit vs. Pittsburg Sixth Game World Series 1909 Oct. 14th. Wilson tagged out stealing third Ending Game Score Detroit 5 Pittsburg 4". Also notated on a side panel is "Property of Geo. Moriarity" The 1909 Series was billed as a showdown between the two stars of the American and National Leagues; Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. The contest went back and forth with the Tigers pulling even in game six but eventually ended with a decisive Pittsburgh victory in Game #7. It was the third consecutive series defeat for Cobb's Tigers and it was the only World Championship for Wagner during his playing career. George Moriarity was well documented to have collected memorabilia during both his playing and umpiring career. His foresight for certain significant pieces is evident in the quality of materials that he preserved many of which would have otherwise likely been lost or destroyed. Museum quality baseball with impeccable provenance: EX ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) DNS

See a Picture of this Item 205 Important August 21, 1921 Ty Cobb single signed baseball attributed to his 3,000th base hit with related materials. Toned red and blue stitched Official American League baseball shows evident game usage incl. various surface abrasions and soiling. The ball has been signed on a side panel, "Ty Cobb 3000 Hit Ball 1921" in black fountain pen. Signature and inscription (in Cobb's hand) have some age fading but remain very clearly legible ranging from 3-6 out of 10. Sweet spot of the ball has been inscribed in period black fountain pen, "Ball Hit For 3000 Hit by Tyrus R. Cobb ? Gift To George Moriarity." The word after Cobb's name is visible but unclear and the terminology that follows is either "Gifted" or "Gift To". While it is unclear as to whether the sweet spot notation was written by Moriarity himself it is known that Moriarity was meticulous in documenting similar artifacts within his collection including 1909 W.Series Game #6 Last Out ball (see Lot 204) and a 1925 World Series ball thrown out by President Coolidge (image on file) that was inscribed as such. The ball was most likely acquired by Moriarity at the actual game as he was one of the umpires present during both games of the doubleheader. At the age of 34 Cobb was the youngest player to have ever accomplished the hallowed feat of reaching the 3,000 hit milestone with a hit off of Boston pitcher Elmer Myers in the second game of a doubleheader played in Detroit. Cobb would play for another seven years ending his illustrious and controversial career with over 4,100 lifetime hits: VG. Offered with the baseball are several other related artifacts which are also attributed to the Moriarity collection and were discovered with the offered baseball. Included are the following: 1) Full web fielder's glove manufactured by D&M Sporting Goods Co. c.1915-20 attributed to Ty Cobb. Very high quality leather glove is a right hand throwing model retaining its original D&M cloth patch on the backstrap and D&M metal button. White buckskin interior is of professional quality and although toned remains intact. Affixed to the backstrap of the glove via two period metal paperclips is a portion of Cobb's personal stationary with the initialed monogram "TRC" that appeared at the top of the letterhead. Based on the silhouette of the paper clips on the paper and the patination of the leather where the paperclips are affixed it is conclusive that they have been in place for a number of years. A small metal rimmed identification tag is present which was added at a later date that reads "Cobb's Glove" on one side and "From G.Moriarity" on the reverse. The glove exhibits evident usage remaining in its original surface with typical crazing and some flaking to the surface. The letters "Mow" are written in ink underneath the leather interior lining which may have been some sort of an identification or possibly were added at a later date. The "w" is not definitive as it is intersected by a period insect hole. While it is unclear as to whether Cobb ever used the offered glove its design and construction are consistent with professional gloves of the period including those used by Cobb. Additionally, it is also evident that Moriarity had requested items from Cobb directly per the reference in the 1918 letter (copy enclosed) of which the letterhead monogram is identical to that attached to the offered glove: VG-EX. 2) Mounted cabinet photo of Cobb batting c.1916 in Tigers uniform with "Ty at Lighthouse 1916" written faintly on the front and "George Moriarity" written in pencil on the back. Image size is 3 1/2"x5 1/2" on its original mount: EX. 3) Two page handwritten letter sent by Cobb to Moriarity in which Cobb details his preparations to serve in World War I within the chemical warfare division. Cobb specifically mentions being measured for a pair of "putties" which was a term for the style of military clothing. Also within the letter is the passage, "I will ship bats today and hope they will be o.k." The letter is signed by Cobb in ink: EX-MT. Along with the offered materials two Cobb professional model bats were originally discovered along with a dated Sept. 12, 1918 typewritten letter on Cobb's stationary as sent to George Moriarity. Cobb writes in this 1918 letter, in part, "Drop me a line and let me know if you received the bats. Sorry I could not get more but the "Fans" raided me for souvenirs. Also let me know if you want to figure on any Exhibition games between those dates, as it will probably be, if I play, the last games on this soil as I will be out of the game for good on my return." A copy of this letter is included with the lot further evidencing the relationship between Cobb and Moriarity in which various items were given to Moriarity. Historic game event baseballs have always been cherished for their inherent value and equally so for the portal they provide into baseball history. Along with the 500 home run mark the 3,000 hit plateau stands as the pinnacle of career achievements for a baseball batsman. That said, there could be no greater exemplar of related memorabilia than the offered ball from the finest overall batter in Major League history. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph and period inscription), LOA from SCD Authentic (regarding the quality of the glove), xerox copy of the 1918 typewritten letter from Cobb to Moriarity (letterhead monogram matches the paper on the glove), and supporting materials relating to Moriarity. (Estimate Upon Request) $55,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 205a Ty Cobb photograph by Charles Conlon c.1915. Poignant sepia tone image of Cobb scowling into the camera lense in early high collared Detroit uniform. Photo size is 4 3/4"x6 1/4" matted and framed in a museum quality display with period pencil notation in Conlon's hand remaining on the back. The photo has some minor surface crazing with a small emulsion chip to the right of Cobb's hat. "Feb. 8, 1924 N.E.A." date is stamped on the back from a re-issue date. Ty Cobb was one of Charles Conlon's favorite subjects inclusive of his famed sliding into third base image that is widely regarded as the pinnacle of baseball photography. The photo has some very minor surface wrinkling with some light chipping to two corners. The brilliance of Conlon's work lies in its simplicity yet powerful resonance as he seems to transport the viewer into the image and the period in which it was taken. Superb original image of baseball's most intesnse competitor taken by baseball's premier photographic artist: EX-MT ($5,000.00-$7,500.00) $4,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 210 Significant 1887 Detroit Wolverines World Championship Dauvray Cup pendant as issued to Charles "Lady" Baldwin. Since its inception in 1884, the World Championship series between the victors of the National League and American Association had become extraordinarily popular. The 1887 match would feature the NL Champion Detroit Wolverines and the Amer. Association Champion St. Louis Browns. The series would be decided after the eleventh game (15 total played) in which the Wolverines captured their eight victory and thusly were crowned Champions of the World. In addition to the laud and admiration of Detroit and baseball fans in general, the team received the Dauvray Cup award as the winners of the series. Actress Helen Dauvray, who was the wife of New York Giants player John Montgomery Ward, had donated a $500.00 silver baseball trophy cup that would be awarded to the series champion each year. If a given team won three titles the cup would then become the personal property of that team. After 1891 the series was disbanded and the cup was misplaced and, to date, has not been located. In addition to the "Dauvray Cup" trophy, each member of the winning team received a Dauvray Cup medal. Offered is one of three surviving Dauvray Cup medals issued to the Detroit Wolverines which had been presented to star pitcher Charles "Lady" Baldwin. The other two known pins, from Dan Brouthers and Sam Thompson, reside in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The ornately designed medal features "Detroits" engraved into a pennant style pin bar with gold crossed bats and ball decor beneath. Three gold link chains suspend a diamond shaped field inscribed "First Winner of The Dauvray Cup" surrounding an applique figural baseball batter. Laurel garniture frames the base of the diamond field and the reverse is inscribed "Chas. Baldwin-P." Baldwin was a very well regarded left handed pitcher of the era who won a record 42 games in 1886. The pin remains in fine overall condition with original surface and patina having only minor surface wear. Medal also includes a portion of its original blue silk covered box which has gilt lettering of the highly regarded New York metalworks company Gorham. This blue covered box piece is identical to the one that once contained Sam Thompson's medal. Total length of the pin is 3 1/4". World Championship award pieces of this nature and dating period are virtually non-existent with the offered exemplar being the first of its type to become available to the collecting public. Fine baseball related Championship award piece of the highest quality and significance: EX-MT (Estimate Upon Request) DNS

Comiskey, Welsh, Carruthers, Richardson, Thompson, Bennett, and Hanlon. Issued for Game #8 played in Boston which Detroit won behind two home runs by Sam Thompson by a score of 9-2. The Series would be decided just three days later in Game #11 played in Baltimore as the Wolverines captured the World Championship. Program itself has some professional restoration to the spine and some creasing at qurter fold lines. Images and overall eye appeal remains very strong. One of only a handful of documented 1887 World Championship programs from Detroit's inaugural baseball championship season: VG-EX (With note to creasing/spine) ($20,000.00-$30,000.00) DNS
