Lot Number: 277

Description: 1948 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees road jersey. Rare grey flannel road jersey worn by DiMaggio during the 1948 season with "New York" across the chest and #5 on the reverse. The "N" in "New" and the "K" in "York" are original to the shirt while the remaining letters have been restored as the jersey was sent down to the Minor League Norfolk team who utilized the two original letters. The number "5" on the reverse is a period replacement. Wilson tag remains inside the collar along with size 44 flag tag and "DiMaggio" chain stitched onto a blue strip tag. Small "48" year tag is affixed inside of the tail. The shirt exhibits attractive period usage with a few small stains and some general age wear while retaining strong color. Jersey was consigned by Mr. Elmer Mingle who was a Minor League player during the 1950's playing for several teams. Upon discovering the offered jersey was that of Joe DiMaggio, Mr. Mingle obtained the jersey and has had it in his possession since that time. The 1948 season marked Joe DiMaggio's tenth straight All-Star appearance finishing second to only Lou Boudreau for the American League MVP award. In addition DiMaggio led the league with 39 home runs and 155 RBI's. By any standards Joe DiMaggio ranks among the finest all around players in Major League history and remains to date a significant figure in American social history. Includes LOA from SCD Authentic and extensive letter of provenance from Elmer Mingle along with supporting documents (Copies of Mingle's contracts, etc.): EX
