Lot Number: 289

Description: Fine Lou Gehrig professional model baseball bat c.1930-31 (PSA/DNA graded "GU 8"). Louisville Slugger 125 model bat with Gehrig facsimile signature burned into the barrel measures 35.75" long and weighs 36.8oz. Outstanding usage wear is evident throughout with grain swelling due to repeated contact and impressed ball/stitch marks. A handle crack has been expertly repaired and surface patina brought back to an appealing displayable level with a light treatment to the surface finish. There is a touch of additional wear with the knob end having two small chips along either side which follow the line of grain. The bat originates from a primary source descendant of a former Washington area bat boy whom is believed to have spent time with several teams inclusive of the Washington Senators. According to family history, the young bat boy had the occassion to meet several notable individuals during this period and one particularly special encounter was with Lou Gehrig. The 1930-31 time period was particularly productive for Gehrig who turned in numbers that would have been career years for nearly any other player concievable. The 1930 season saw him leading the American League in RBIs while collecting (41) homeruns and hitting an impressive .379 finishing second to Al Simmons who bested him by only (2) percentage points. A similarly impressive 1931 ended with League leading totals in runs, hits, RBI, and homeruns. A fresh to market Gehrig game bat is always noteworthy and an example with strong provenance and usage characteristics is an exceedingly rare find. The first Gehrig bat we have offered in many years and one of the best to have entered the marketplace in recent memory. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA with assigned grade of "GU 8", LOA from Hunt Auctions, and letter of provenance: EX
