Lot Number: 279

Description: Rare 1939 Jewel Ens Pittsburgh Pirates professional model road jersey. Gray flannel jersey has "Pirates" team name across the front done in red on blue on white felt. Number "33", issued to Coach Jewel Ens, appears on the back. An original 1939 "Baseball Centennial" patch is on the left sleeve however an outline visible on close examination suggests that this is a replacement. "Spalding" tag in the collar has adjacent size (46) and "Dry Clean Only" tags. This was a short lived style with zipper front which the Pirates appear to have transitioned to sometime during the 1939 season and by 1940 their road jerseys had only a logo patch on the front. Well preserved with use, wash, and some minor general age related wear. One of very few surviving Pirates examples from 1939 to have reached the market. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
