Lot Number: 118

Description: Rare 1891 Roger Connor autographed New York Giants stock certificate. Important stock certificate is number (46) and was issued for (10) shares of "The National Exhibition Company" in the name of Roger Connor. Connor was perhaps the dead-ball era's most noted slugger hitting over .300 (12) times and his (138) career homeruns are a 19th Century record. He spent nearly a decade playing in New York and many accounts credit his large stature as being the inspiration behind the "Giants" team name (they had, until 1884, been known as the Gothams). A standout on some of the most talent laden teams of the 19th Century he helped pilot the New York Giants to Championships in 1888 and 1889. Connor passed in 1931 leaving a near nonexistent supply of autographed material behind and his Induction into the Hall of Fame in 1976 renders him signature among the most sought after of all early stars. Signed the back "Roger Connor" in period fountain pen. It is also signed on the front by team President John B. Day and Treasurer J.W. Spalding. The signatures have been graded "EX-MT 6" by PSA however that factors the Day and Spalding (which are effected by punch hole cancellations) and in our opinion the Connor grades a superior 8 out of 10. General wear includes light toning, scattered creases/wrinkles, and some residue along the left edge. "Cancelled" upon redemption with handwritten notation to that effect on the front and there are punch holes along the lower edge. Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA with "Stoneham Collection" pedigree noted on the label and includes the original "stub" portion from the Giants stock certificate book: Sigs. PSA "EX-MT 6", Document VG
