Description: Eddie Mathews 1959 "Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Award" Crown for "Outstanding Batting Achievement". The Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Award was conceived in 1956 to honor the ball player with the greatest slugging average, an average that combined both home runs and runs batted in. The ultimate recognition for power hitting, the crown was described by Joe DiMaggio as "the greatest award in baseball." The Sultan of Swat Award, in the form of an elaborate crown of gold metal and red velvet, was presented seasonally for a period of ten years with recipients including: Mickey Mantle '56, Ted Williams '57, Ernie Banks '58, Eddie Mathews '59, Roger Maris '60 & '61, Willie Mays '62, Hank Aaron '63, Harmon Killebrew '64, Willie Mays '65, and Frank Robinson '66. The award bears lettering that is both engraved and applied to the base, reading "Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Award, Presented to Eddie Mathews For Outstanding Batting Achievement, 1959, Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association." On the rear of the crown, is engraved text related to some of Mathews most noted achievements at that point in his career. Crossed bat and baseball decor also adorn the crown with its original "jewels" and red velvet center intact (note - two of jeweled placards have been reaffixed). Hint of light wear: EX/MT
