Lot 583

Description: Rare 1916 Brooklyn Baseball Club Blue Laws protest invitation to Ebbets Field (VG/EX). Historical invitation for an Oct. 1, 1916 protest at Ebbets Field against New York’s restrictive Sunday "Blue Laws" in Brooklyn. During the mid-1910s, Brooklyn became a primary battleground for personal liberty and the "Right to Sunday Recreation." To circumvent laws that forbade charging admission on Sundays, anti-Blue Law coalitions and venue owners formatted mass rallies, baseball games, and entertainment events as "private, invitation-only educational exhibitions." Double-sided 5 1/2"x5" paper invitation outlines the time, Ebbetts Field venue, and the purpose of the gathering - framing baseball on Sunday as an event "that is in the interest of good morals and conducive to the physical and moral betterment of our citizens." Invitation has been signed in pencil on the reverse by an attendee, and has age-related wear, including toning and light creasing/wrinkling: VG/EX.
