Lot Number: 280

Description: Babe Ruth and others autographed baseball dated from the week he hit his 500th home run. Red and blue stitched Reach E.Barnard Official American League baseball has been signed "Babe Ruth" across the sweet spot in fountain pen rating 6-6/7 out of 10. Bucky Harris has signed just above and Earl Whitehill is on an adjacent panel. Written on in unknown hand is "Aug. 18. 1929 Ruth 500 Home Runs This Week, Whitehill 2 Hit No Run Game Against NY." These notations appear to relate to the Yankees August 15th game vs. Detroit in which Whitehill pitched for the Tigers (holding the scoreless Yankees to just 2 hits). Also written on is "To Earl Meador Jr. Age 6 Mos. 18 Days." The ball has been in the Family of Earl Meador since that time. Meador was the son of a Buick salesman who had business dealings with many Tigers players and was well known amongst members of the ball club. He would often take his son to Navin Field and on at least one occasion had opportunity to meet Babe Ruth. The father, Arling Earl Meador, is shown with Ruth in an included vintage 4"x6" photo. Earl Jr. can be seen with Ruth in an included modern printed copy of a signed photo in which he is holding the young boy. Includes full LOA from JSA: Sigs. VG, Ball VG-EX
