Lot Number: 144

Description: Outstanding c.1948 Ted Williams professional model baseball bat - museum quality example dating to his 4th batting title (PSA/DNA GU9). Louisville Slugger 125 model bat with Williams facsimile signature in the barrel measures 35" long and weighs 32.7oz. Model number "W155" is factory stamped in the knob. Uncracked with outstanding use evident throughout including ball contact and cleat marks predominantly appearing on the right and left barrel. This is a highly desirable trait in a Williams game bat as he was well know to hold the label facing up or down (which would result in contact with these sides). Repeated contact has lead to some grain swelling on the front of the barrel which has a minor chip. The lack of a number "9" on the knob is likewise consistent with Williams bats dating to this time period. A light coat of pine tar remains on the handle and there are a few scattered rack marks. The bat is pinpointed to an order which was placed by Williams on August 20, 1948 through analysis of the particular combination of markings present by noted authority John Taube. Williams lead the American League in 1948 hitting (.369) to claim his fourth career batting title. This particular bat originated from the collection of Elwood C. Kastner. Mr. Kastner resided in the Chatham area of Massachusetts with his wife Eunice for many years. Kastner was highly regarded as the Dean of Admissions at NYU with a body of work that included great attention to the rights of minority students. He also later served as the Commissioner of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Ted Williams became acquainted with Kastner and based on family history was so impressed with his work serving minority students that he presented him with the offered bat. A remarkable example being offered for the first time publicly with impeccable provenance. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA (graded "GU 9") and letter of provenance from Kastner family member: EX
