Lot Number: 138

Description: Important 1891-1909 New York Giants stock certificate book - a trove of early team owner autographs including at least (88) pieces signed by John T. Brush. Significant leatherbound folio of stock certificates issued for "The National Exhibition Company" (the Corporate name under which the New York Giants operated) between 1891 and 1909. Contained within is a trove of autographs related to early New York Giants owners and executives. There are approximately (208) total certificates and nearly all are signed on the front by the acting team President at the time. These will include (47) signed by John B. Day, (61) signed by Andrew Freedman, and (88) signed by John T. Brush. Many of the certificates were also issued to these notable figures and thus will be signed by them again on the back. Among the more notable include certificate number (1) issued to John B. Day and signed by Day on the back (one of several issued to Day); certificate number (3) issued to Edward Talcott and signed by Talcott on the back (one of several issued to Talcott - in addition there is a Talcott signed Indemnity Bond); certificate number (5) issued to J.W. Spalding and signed by Spalding on the back (one of several issued to Spalding - in addition there is a Spalding signed Indemnity Bond); certificate number (7) issued to John T. Brush and signed by Brush on the back (one of several issued to and signed by Brush before he became President of the team); certificate number (17) issued to Cornelius Van Cott and signed by Van Cott on back (one of several issued to Van Cott); and certificate number (72) issued to Andrew Freedman and signed by Freedman on the back - this representing (1200) shares, an important transaction which effectively shifted a controlling interest in the team to Freedman (one of several issued to Freedman). Certificates would be issued and removed from the book with the left hand stub portion remaining. When they were redeemed or turned in for transfer each was then reaffixed to its' respective stub. The methods by which they were secured in place varies (some glued, some taped, etc.) and the certificates themselves have varying degrees of handling/storage wear. In addition, the act of returning the certificate effectively "cancelled" it and most will have notations written on the front to this effect and nearly all have holes punched through the areas in which the team executives signed. Book itself has general handling and storage wear and there are numerous related documents affixed to both stubs and/or certificates throughout. Includes Stoneham Family certificate of provenance and auction LOA from JSA: Overall EX
