Description: Very rare Hugh Jennings single signed (twice) and inscribed game used baseball c.1909 (d.1928). Toned and clear coated baseball with period black fountain pen signature and inscription across side panel, "Hugh Jennings Boston-Sept. 9, 09. Ball in game that won the pennant brought back to Nellis". Additional inscription in Jennings' hand "Pennant 1909" adorns panel beneath and Jennings has also signed another side panel "To Nellis from Hugh". The signatures and all handwriting are in Jennings' hand ranging from 7 to 9 out of 10. Under close inspection the writing (including autographs) has been enhanced in the period quite likely by Nellis who was Jennings' mistress. Hughie Jennings was a prolific figure in professional baseball throughout the late 19th and early 20th century. His flamboyant style and trademark "Ee-Yah!" cheer as manager of the Tigers. One of only a scant few known examples from the early baseball legend. Includes full LOA from JSA: Ball: VG, Signature: EX-MT (with note to enhancement)
