Lot Number: 254

Description: Sam Rice and Hank Shanks attributed professional quality baseball bat c.1910s. Unmarked wooden bat measures just shy of 34" long and weighs an imposing 43oz. The names "Rice" and "Shanks" have been block letter stamped in both the barrel and knob ("Shanks" is also stamped on opposite end). Both these name stampings and faded grease pencil side writing are done in a style which confirms that the bat emanates from the Louisville Slugger factory. Although the side writing can not be fully deciphered the name "Rice" is clear in the middle. Sam Rice and Hank Shanks were members of the Washington Senators overlapping from 1915-1922 and it is presumed that this bat was to their liking and sent to the Louisville Slugger factory to use as a template for future orders (note: there are no bats listed on Sam Rice's records as matching these specs but there are some orders in the period for which weight was not specified). The bat is uncracked with light evident usage wear. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
