Description:Franklin County Base Ball Association silver trophy ball c.1867. Presentational ball done in metal is engraved, "Franklin County Base Ball Association, Organized 1867." Simulated stitching is likewise etched into the surface in the manner of a lemon peel baseball. The piece remains in outstanding condition with just a hint of light handling wear and is by far the best preserved example among those offered in this sale (which collectively account for a significant portion of surviving silverplate trophy balls). The 1860s represent baseball's formative years and the first professional team was not founded until the last year of that decade. In its' infancy the game was played by amateurs in contests throughout the Country. An article published on May 27, 1867 relays that "the first contest for the Silver Ball, purchased by the Franklin County Base Ball Association...was won by the Notunck Club." This infers that the ball was intended to be passed from winning team to winning team and would explain why no specific team name is engraved in the piece: EX/MT
