Lot Number: 81

Description: 1872 Richmond Agricultural Society "Successful Competitors" silver trophy ball. Presentational ball done in metal is engraved "Awarded to the Successful Competitors by Thomas Sampson, President of Richmond Co Agricultural Society, Sept 1872." While details of the game(s) played to earn this prestigious award have been lost to time it remains one of the more visually appealing examples of the small surviving population of presentational trophy balls. There is light tarnish and mild wear to the silverplate surface and scattered dents/indentations. The ball was first offered some years ago (date unknown) by Christies within a larger group of period silver pieces and was apparently purchased from the buyer of that lot (includes copies of a portion of the catalog listing and a note from Christies with regard to an offer the buyer had made): VG
