Description: 1883 "Athletics" silver trophy ball - Meriden, Connecticut, the team Connie Mack would start with in 1884. Presentational ball done in metal is engraved, "Presented by J.F. Ives, to the Athletics, 1883." Simulated stitching is likewise etched into the surface in the manner of a baseball. An August 10, 1883 article published in the Meriden Daily Republican (Meriden, CT) reads in part, "In Tinker & Boardman's window is a silver ball which J.F. Ives is to give to the club winning two out of three games. The Elms and the Athletics are the clubs specified..." While he did not join the team until their following season, Connie Mack played with Meriden starting in 1884. There is light tarnish and mild wear to the silverplate surface and scattered dents/indentations: VG
