Description: Monstrous archive of (15,500+) 1970-1981 Pittsburgh Pirates Spring Training related checks including a 1971 endorsed by Roberto Clemente and many thousands made out to other players (GD-EX with a few better) Please note: bidders with serious interest in this lot are encouraged to schedule an appointment to view it in person. Mammoth group of checks which were issued by the Pittsburgh Pirates related to Spring Training expenses from 1970 through 1981. They have been sorted by a prior owner/collector into those made payable to "on roster" players and "off roster" players and other related personnel and/or entities/companies/groups/etc (please note - a good number of these "off roster" checks were made out to players however they may not have made the Pirates regular season squad). A spreadsheet which can be referenced as a guide (but is not entirely accurate) relays that over (6,500) checks fall into the "on roster" category (meaning they were made payable to players who made regular season rosters in the span of seasons noted). It should be assumed that portions of these will bear authentic signature endorsements on the backs and *portions are secretarial or otherwise non-authentic and in some cases the checks are not endorsed*. Given the large size of the group is in not feasible to screen (or have the lot screened) for authenticity in its' entirety. Breakdown value is extremely substantial regardless. A portion of the checks bear the Pirates logo on front and/or have their "Pittsburgh Athletic Company" corporate name printed on while others are from more generic accounts. There are small quantities dating from 1970 through 1974 and far more sizable numbers representing the years which follow. In nearly all cases of "bigger name" players there are many checks issued throughout the time span of the group. To give a rough idea of the sort of quantities which can be expected there are approx. (20) issued to Bob Moose, approx. (40) to Danny Murtaugh, and over (125) issued to WIllie Stargell. The highlight piece is a 1971 check made payable to Roberto Clemente which has been endorsed on the back (PSA authenticated and encapsulated with the signature graded "NM-MT 8"). A sampling of other better names includes Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Al Oliver, Danny Murtaugh, Bob Moose, Jose Pagan, Dave Cash, Dock Ellis, Steve Blass, Manny Sanguillen, Kent Tekulve, John Candelaria, Bert Blyleven, Bill Madlock, Chuck Tanner, Harvey Haddix, and nearly every other player/coach who appears on a Pirates Spring Training roster from 1970-1981. Within the checks made payable to non-players there are many of note including checks made out Vera Clemente, other teams/Leagues, sporting goods companies, and many others which would be of interest to collectors. There is (1) check made out to Bill Mazeroski however this appears to have a secretarial signature on the back. Varying degrees/types of wear throughout. Exceptional breakdown value overall. As mentioned, we have been furnished a spreadsheet/list which can be passed along to parties which have strong interest HOWEVER it is to be used only a guide approximating roughly what is included and it WILL NOT be entirely accurate: GD-EX with a few lesser ($15,000-$25,000)Final Bid: $15,945.00
