Typed letter on "War Department, Chemical Warfare Service" stationary is dated August 20, 1918 and addressed to "Mr. Christopher Mathewson, c/o Cincinnati Base Ball Club." Content reads in part, "Dear Sir: ...it is expected in the near future that will be granted a commission in the Chemical Warfare Service. Enclosed you will find extract of a letter from an officer now serving overseas, which it is believed will be helpful to you in selecting your overseas equipment...you should, at your earliest opportunity, be vaccinated..."
