Typed letter on "War Department, Chemical Warfare Service" stationary is dated August 19, 1918 and addressed to "Mr. Christopher Mathewson, c/o Cincinnati Base Ball Club." Content reads in part, "Dear Mr. Mathewson: This is to notify you that your papers have been put through...and your commission should be issued in a few days' time..." It goes on to relay what will happen after approval and additional steps that Mathewson should take before reporting for duty and notes "...very shortly after that I will be able to shake hands with you in France..."
