Lot Number: 56

Description: Exquisite Christy Mathewson autographed c.1910s large format studio photograph (PSA/DNA "NM-MT 8"). Sepia toned 10"x13" photograph showing Mathewson posed in studio setting while wearing his New York Giants uniform. It has been signed, "Best Wishes to Arthur W. Collins, Fraternally Christy Mathewson" in fountain pen. The signature is graded "8" by PSA. The image can be dated to the first half of the 1910s (c.1911-15) due to the presence of pinstripes and team logo embroidered on the sleeve. A "Unity N.Y." is printed within. Photograph is in outstanding condition showing only a hint of light toning, is mounted to heavy stock backing, and comes in a vintage frame in which it was long displayed (11.5"x14.5" with replaced glass). While it cannot be stated with certainty, it is likely that Collins attended Bucknell at the same time as Mathewson (a vague reference to both related to basketball at the school can be found online) and this would be supported by his use of "Fraternally" within the salutation applied to the photo. Among the very finest condition grade Mathewson autographed photographs to have ever been offered with its direct provenance elevating it to a likely unique plateau for the medium. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA and Mathewson collection certificate of provenance: Sig. PSA/DNA 8, Photo EX
