Description:Important Chicago style head harness leather football helmet by Spalding c.1901-03. Exceedingly rare early helmet is one of only a handful of known surviving examples and the style is among the most sought after within this field of collecting. Designed by University of Chicago trainer H.C. Conibear and produced by Spalding (with their impressed mark on the center of the crown) for a very short period between 1901 and 1903. The crown is done in molded leather and a pair of affixed straps hold the leather ear pads which retain much of the original padding. Canvas and leather straps hold all pieces to each other. Original chin strap is in place. The Spalding mark is bold and well defined being instantly recognizable even when viewed from a distance. Nice patina with some general age and mild use evident throughout. The first example which we can recall offering or even viewing in person and a "holy grail" rarity within the helmet collecting field: Overall EX
