Description: Very rare Pete Coscarart "Brooklyn Safety Cap" - Dodgers Spring Training hat c.1941. Exceedingly rare experimental hat was introduced by Brooklyn Dodgers owner Lee MacPhail in Spring Training of 1941. After two of players had been hit in the head by errant pitches the season before MacPhail insisted that his players use a newly conceived of design which gave the appearance of a regular hat but had plastic inserts sewn in. The offered example is in dark blue material and has a "Brooklyn Safety Cap" inside. The name "P Cosarart" is chain stitched on the interior leather band along with size (7). His jersey number "3" is written under the brim in marker. Well preserved with appropriate use/wear evident throughout. One of only a few of this type known to have survived.
