Lot Number: 119

Description: Late 1920s George L. Kelly Cincinnati Reds professional model hat. Exceedingly rare style done in dark blue with applied red felt "C" team logo on front. Period "Spalding" tag on the interior leather band is beside the name "Kelly" done in chain stitch. There is no size tag and at some point it was made smaller by folding some fabric (and a portion of the band) over itself with this small section stitched together. Use and some general age related wear includes minor discoloration and some cracking to the leather band. A two-time World Series Champion, Kelly lead the National League in homeruns in 1921 and RBI in 1920 and 1924. His Major League career stretched from 1915 to 1932 and included stints with the Giants and Reds and short seasons with the Cubs and Dodgers. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1973. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: VG
