Lot Number: 1

Description: Significant 1867 Niagara Base Ball Club large format cabinet photograph. Early mounted image pictures the Niagara team wearing full uniforms with an uncommon checked plaid pattern. The image itself measures 9 1/2"x13" on its original 14"x17" mount matted and framed. Interestingly, the player at the far left of the front row has had his facial image "tipped" onto the full photo in the period. The Niagara club was one of the earliest organized baseball teams in the country with evidence detailing game play as early as the 1850s. The photograph itself remains fairly clean with light surface wear (including a few small scuffs). The mount has some typical light soiling (not visible under the matting). While there are a few later prints of this image in existence, it is very possible that the offered copy is a unique surviving original in this format. Originally offered as part of the collection of Deacon White and will include letter from Hunt Auctions confirming provenance: VG-EX

Estimated Price Range: ($2,000-$4,000)
