Lot Number: 182

Description: Roy Campanella "Lifetime Award" from Wilson Sporting Goods c.1950s (Campanella Family Provenance). Presentational plaque (13.5"x13.5") has a metal placard affixed which reads "To Roy Campanella, In appreciation of his unselfish contribution to baseball, Mr. W.P. Holmes, President, Wilson Sporting Goods Co." Mounted above is a bronzed Wilson model A2420 "Roy Campanella Personal Model" catchers' mitt. An included letter of provenance from Roxie Campanella relays that it "was presented to Mr. Campanella in the late 1950's as a lifetime award. According to family history it is likely that this is a game used Roy Campanella glove." Among the premier catchers' of his time, Campanella surely would have been in contention for awarding of the famed Gold Glove Award which is presented each year to the standout player at each position by Rawlings. The annual tradition began in 1957 and Campanella's career ended abruptly following that season thus he was never in a position to be a recipient. While not of the same ilk, the offered award piece has similar eye appeal as a display piece. Includes letter of provenance from the Campanella Family and period 8"x10" photo of Campanella posed with similar (not the same) model glove: EX/MT
