Lot Number: 140

Description: 1972 Willie Mays San Francisco Giants professional model road uniform (SGC/Grob "Superior). Gray flannel jersey has "San Francisco" team name across the front and number "24" on back. In the collar is a "Mays" embroidered strip tag. An additional on the front tail notes year ("1972") and it appears below a Wilson tag (size 40). Pants are likewise by Wilson (size 32) with "Mays" and "1972" embroidered strip tags. Light use/wear is evident throughout (along with a touch of minor age/storage related wear) which is appropriate given that Mays appeared in only (9) road games for the Giants in 1972 before a shift to New York to play with the Mets. The uniform has long been in the private holdings of the Stoneham Family, a name synonymous with the Giants who were run by scion Charles Stoneham and later his son Horace for a span of nearly (60) years. It stands to reason that given the provenance it could very well have been Mays' last Giants road uniform and it is unquestionably one of his last. Mays spent almost the entirety of his (22) year playing career with the Giants and is universally regarded as one of the greatest baseball players in history. Includes Stoneham Family letter of provenance and LOAs from SGC/Grob (graded "Superior) and Hunt Auctions: EX
