Description: Unique and Historic 1956 Bill Russell autographed presentational key to the City of Boston (Russell Collection Photo Match). Oversized wooden key (measuring a full 7 feet long) presented to Bill Russell upon his arrival in Boston to sign his first contract with the Celtics on December 16, 1956. The occasion heralded an era of Celtics dominance of the NBA and it can be argued that the draft day acquisition of Russell, in a trade with the Hawks, is among the most significant moments in 20th Century American sports history. Under Legendary Coach Red Auerbach, Russell and the Celtics would go on to claim an unprecedented eleven Championships in thirteen seasons. Hand painted on both sides with "Welcome To Boston" text and the "Celtics" team name is layered over basketball background. In fine overall condition with some light general wear in a few areas retaining excellent original patina. Signed on the end panel by Russell in black marker. Includes several images of Russell (modern print) with the key visible on that day including signing his rookie contract with the Celtics. Note: Given its unique significance, this item is being offered within the Russell Collection auction but does not originate from the personal collection of Mr. Russell. A similar related charitable donation will still be made from a portion of its sale proceeds. Includes full LOA from JSA: EX
