Description: Prestigious 2019 Bill Russell ESPY Arthur Ashe Award For Courage. Among the many modern era awards within sports there are few that carry the social importance of the ESPY Arthur Ashe Award For Courage. Named after the tennis legend and human rights advocate, the award recognizes those who reflect the spirit, strength and courage of Arthur Ashe whose dedication to human rights causes equaled his play on the tennis court. Previous recipients include Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali and NC State coach, Jimmy Valvano who won the inaugural honor in 1993. Bill Russell was appropriately honored in 2019 for his lifetime of commitment to Civil Rights and other related social justice causes. Stylish silverplated award stands 18" tall with "ESPY" raised lettering on two side panels. Engraved placard embossed to the front, "The ESPYS 2019 Arthur Ashe Award For Courage Bill Russell". The award was presented to Russell by Kobe Bryant during ceremonies. During the presentation of the award Bryant stated, "Bill Russell is the greatest winner that sports has ever known." Upon notification of the award in 2019 Russell remarked, "I’m humbled to receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Arthur was a man of great courage, that fought on and off the court for equality. It is a great honor to be part of a unique group of previous recipients." The award retains its original lidded case and includes printed photo of Bryant presenting the award to Russell.
