Description: Significant 1999 Bill Russell Boston Celtics Tribute Night presentational wristwatch (Number Retirement Ceremony). Exceptional quality gold men's wristwatch as presented to Bill Russell during his tribute night on May 26, 1999. Watch features Celtics leprechaun mascot on facing with twelve small diamonds at the numeral positions. Engraved on the backplate, "Presented by the Boston Celtics on the Occasion of The Bill Russell Tribute May 26, 1999 Fleet Center". Marked Jostens on back of watch and retains its original green leather casing. On March 12, 1972, the Boston Celtics quietly raised a white banner with green number "6" stitched into the rafters at the Boston Garden. At the request of Bill Russell to his beloved coach Red Auerbach, the ceremony was held with little fanfare just before game time and last only a few minutes. The Celtics greatest player's number 6 would appropriately never be worn again by another player. On May 26, 1999 the Celtics held a ceremony to re-dedicate Russell's retired number having moved into the new Fleet Center from the Boston Garden. This time, Bill was moved to tears after a thunderous standing ovation from the Boston fans whose appreciation and respect had evolved (deservedly) since Russell's playing career ended. Red Auerbach assisted Bill Russell to once again raise number 6 to the rafters. Very poignant presentational item with relation to a significant milestone in Bill Russell's historic career. Includes signed letter of provenance from Bill Russell: NM
