Large silverplated figural trophy with basketball player ornament atop a two handled loving cop mounted on black painted wooden pedestal base. Two inscribed silverplated placards reading, "The President's Trophy Awarded to Bill Russell As The Most Valuable Player During Season 1961-62 Chosen By The Players Of The National Basketball Association In A Poll Conducted by N.E.A. Service" and "Presented at East-West All-Star Game Los Angeles Jan. 16, 1963". Russell excelled yet again during the 1961-62 season helping the Celtics set a record with 60 total wins. In the playoffs Russell battled with his arch rival Wilt Chamberlain and the Philadelphia Warriors "holding" him to 22 points in the clinching game won by the Celtics. In the NBA Finals, Bill Russell and the Celtics dueled with Jerry West and the L.A. Lakers. In the final game which went into overtime Russell ended with career high 40 rebounds and another NBA title for his team. Bill Russell was named as the Most Valuable Player for the season, the third of his five career MVP honors. The trophy was presented to Bill Russell at the NBA All-Star Game held in Los Angeles the following season as was customary during the period. Along with the other Bill Russell NBA MVP trophies within this auction, the offered example is among the most significant of any player related basketball awards to have been offered at public auction. Includes signed letter of provenance from Bill Russell: EX-MT
