Lot Number: 6

Description: Bill Hoffer Pittsburgh Pirates attributed jersey, jacket, and hat c.1899 Early group of equipment includes a letter of provenance signed by the Great Grandson of Bill Hoffer who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1895-1901. During that span he played on the 1895 and 96 Baltimore Orioles Pennant winning teams, enjoyed (3) seasons with (20) wins or more, and still has the 16th highest winning percentage in Major League history. A September 1957 article written for the Baltimore Sun Sunday Supplement about his life and times (one which quotes him extensively) notes that "Hofer still has a pre-1900 uniform, from his Pittsburgh days." The offered ensemble is that uniform and while it lacks any team identifiers (not allowing for anything greater than an attribution to the Pirates) it is clearly of the highest quality construction for the period. The jacket is done in gray wool with wide lapels and there is an early "A.G. Spalding Bros" tag in the collar. All buttons are now missing. Jersey is long sleeved with no tagging and was issued with (4) buttons, (3) of which remain in place. Included hat is likewise unmarked. Use some expected age/storage related wear throughout. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from the Hoffer Family: VG-EX
