Description: Detroit Lions professional model jersey c.1956 attributed to Howard "Hopalong" Cassady. Blue durene jersey with three quarter length sleeves has number "40" on the front and back. Inside the crotch strap are a "Rawlings" manufacturers tag (noting size, 42), "Lippman's Detroit" resellers tag, and a wash tag. Strong use is evident throughout and there are team repairs on the left shoulder and sleeve. Cassady joined the Lions in 1956 after a lauded college career at Ohio State which saw him awarded a Heisman Trophy for his play during the 1955 season. Given the style of tagging and configuration of the jersey (with no numbers on sleeves) we are confident in attributing it to his 1956 Rookie season. PLEASE NOTE: while images of Cassady wearing this style jersey can be found it is most likely that the jersey dates to an earlier season and was used by a different Lions player before possibly being used by Cassady.
