Lot Number: 225

Description: Extremely rare Eddie Gaedel autographed Government postcard (PSA/DNA "NM-MT 8"). Desirable "Edward Gaedel" signature with "St. Louis Browns" noted in his own hand is done in fountain pen on a September 29, 1951 dated Government postcard. The signature has been graded "NM-MT 8" by PSA/DNA. Card displays light toning along with a touch of handling and storage wear. Sporting uniform number "1/8" Geadel appeared in the August 19, 1951 Browns vs. Tigers game in St. Louis where he took (4) pitches, walked to first (to the delight of the 18,000 fans on hand), and was replaced by a pinch runner. At 3'7" he remains the shortest man to ever appear in a Major League baseball game. The stunt was organized by Bill Veeck who had promised ticket buyers "a festival of surprises" and of all of the notable promotions the famed team owner dreamed up during his many years in baseball, the Gaedel at bat is among his most memorable. The offered represents the first Gaedel autograph we have ever offered and it is one of a scant few examples known. Housed within a 17"x20" display, it is PSA/DNA encapsulated (as can been seen through the back of the frame it is secured in place with tape placed on the holder). Includes full LOA from SGC: Sig. NM
