Description: 1939 Lou Gehrig autographed personal check covering his stay at the Mayo Clinic (with related pieces). June 20, 1939 dated counter check drawn on his account at the "First National Bank of New Rochelle" has been filled out entirely in his hand and signed "Henry Louis Gehrig" at lower right. Fountain pen handwriting and signature rate 8/9 out of 10 and there is some light handling and storage wear. It is made payable to the "Kahler Hotel" which has long been connected to the famed Mayo Clinic. Gehrig had removed himself from the Yankee lineup on May 2, 1939 and checked into the Mayo Clinic on June 13th. He would be released on the 19th and this check, written to cover his lodging costs, was written the following day. Previously for display in a 20"x33.5" frame (frame and contents are included) which includes a 1940 dated typewritten letter (wrinkles and mild wear) that Gehrig sent to a gentleman whom had inquired about his health ("...my condition, as diagnosed by the physicians of Mayo Clinic, is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis..."). As was necessitated by his failing health, the letter has been signed with a stamp. The letter, and a vintage newspaper article related to his death, are affixed to a scrapbook page and secured in place with conservation tape. Includes full LOA from JSA: Sig.
