Lot Number: 348

Description: Fine Babe Ruth and others autographed baseball from the 1944 Esquire All-American Game with related material. Spalding F.Frick Official National League baseball has been signed across the sweetspot by Babe Ruth. In addition, the ball has been signed by Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Ernie Lombardi, and Phil Weintraub. All were on hand for the August 7, 1944 "Esquire All American Boy's Baseball Game", played at the Polo Grounds, which featured standout high school players from across the country. Divided into East and West teams, managed by Mel Ott and Connie Mack, the East prevailed behind by a masterful performance by Billy Pierce, who pitched six shutout innings. Pierce would go on to have a lengthy and noted career in the Major Leagues but always retained the ball from what was surely a pivotal moment in his formative years. Included are an original game program and ticket stub and several period photographs and a scrapbook page related to the game (which includes an image of Pierce and other players with Babe Ruth). Signatures are done in fountain pen rating 7 to 8/9 out of 10 and the ball displays mild soiling and some light wear. Includes full LOA from JSA and letter of provenance from the Pierce Family: Sigs. EX-NM, Ball VG/EX, Balance GD-EX
