Description: 1918 Christy Mathewson Chemical Warfare Service Captain's Appointment with related photo and telegraph. Significant official document as issued by the War Department on August 22, 1918, notes "The appointment of Christopher Mathewson as captain, Chemical Warfare Service, United States Army" with orders to report. The document (5"x7.5") is mounted (along top edge) within a heavy stock folder which also houses a period sepia toned photograph of Mathewson in full military dress (just under 5"x8", "Cincinnati Post" stamp on back along with ink notations, one of which reads "Send to Christy Mathewson"). Included Western Union Telegram from Mathewson to the Assistant of General Seibert (Commander of 1st Division, Western Front, during World War 1) begins, "Have accepted appointment..." with a request for further instructions.
