Lot Number: 183

Description: John McGraw Tuxedo Tobacco trolley card advertising sign c.1910. Desirable display piece from one of the most attractive series of player endorsed advertisements of the period. Heavy stock 11"x21" sign has "John J McGraw" block lettered name at top and his product endorsement quote and facsimile signature below. His lifelike portrait appears on right side. Remains in original "as found" condition with some chipping to full bleed red colored borders which also have a pair of very small tears (approximately .25") and show some very light and isolated corner creases. Central portion is affected by one hairline crease at upper left which extends approximately 1" from red border. Very small hole the size of a nail head within printed endorsement text. A light "haze" or discoloration throughout could likely be reversed through use of a professional restoration company. Back has mild to heavy scattered toning and spotting with some tape at upper edge which has a touch of surface loss at one corner. The piece retains its vibrant coloration and remains in what is surely one of the nicest condition all-original examples to come to market. Our consignor was involved in the original small "find" of Tuxedo signs some years back and retained this copy for his personal collection: EX/MT
