Description:Exceedingly rare Town Ball attributed "dellil" bat c.1850 (PSA/DNA). Hand turned 18.5" long wooden bat is attributed to the game of town ball which was an early bat and ball game. Along with rounders it is considered a precursor to modern baseball. The object was to hit a ball into play using a bat which could be any length the batter desired and the shorter examples, intended for one hand swinging, were known as a "dellil." The offered example, the first attributed to be a dellil which we have offered, includes documentation from John Taube - PSA/DNA (cert number 1B31302) confirming that it dates c.1850. The piece shows some mild use and appropriate age and there are (4) small notches carved in the handle (reasons unknown). An interesting curiosity and very rare with this being one of few attributed examples known: EX
