Lot 52

Description: Petersburg Goobers team cabinet photograph, c. 1912-1920 (VG/EX). Sepia-toned photograph showing uniformed team members of the Petersburg Goobers of the Virginia League remains on its original 12"x14" mount with "Goober Petersburg's Cigar" peanut logo adhered in the bottom margin. The Goobers captured the Virginia League Championships in 1911, 1913 and 1919, but are best known as the first baseball landing spot for Hall of Famer Sam Rice, who began his career with the Goobers in 1914 as a pitcher. Manager wearing "Champions" on the front stripe of his uniform is depicted in the center of the photo, possibly indicating the 1913 championship team and the inclusion of Rice in the photo in 1914. Player sitting on the ground, second from right in front row, does bear some resemblance to Rice, but photo is not guaranteed as such. After being signed from the Goobers to the Washington Senators in 1915 (as an outfielder), Rice went on to a Hall of Fame career with 2,987 hits and a .322 lifetime batting average. Light toning and a touch of age-related wear to the photo, with heavier wear to peanut logo and mount: VG/EX. ($500-$1,000)
