Lot 91

Description: c.1970s New York Yankees professional quality batting helmet (Tommy John letter of provenance, see description) (EX) Flapless helmet by American Baseball Cap has the Yankees team logo on front and an "ABC" manufacturers mark on the back. Interior labels are affixed but faded to the point of no longer being readable/visible. Also applied to the back, on the outside, are "15" numeral decals. An included letter of provenance from Tommy John states that the helmet was used by Thurman Munson in 1979 and then given to John by Pete Sheehy (longtime Yankees equipment Manager). Given the small size of the helmet we believe it more likely that it was prepared for and used by Munson's son who would have been (13) or (14) at the time and may have been a batboy or otherwise worked out with the team. While we relay the information provided by Tommy John we are in no way offering the helmet as having been issued to or used by Thurman Munson: EX ($300-$500)
