Lot Number: 627

Description: Important July 24, 1911 Addie Joss Day All-Star team photograph. Long regarded both in and out of the hobby as the finest baseball related photograph the offered example is only the second to be sold publicly (First was sold by Hunt Auctions, Inc. in our August 1998 sale for a record price of $25,300.00). The image measures 10 1/2”x13 1/2” picturing 14 players incl. Cobb, Johnson, Baker, Collins, Speaker, and Wood. The clarity and contrast remain in perfect original condition, image has two small tear repairs on back of far left edge and two 1” square areas of restoration at far rt. edge from album removal (both are in non descript areas). Photo also had players names written on front in the period and have been professionally removed with only faint vestiges of ink residue of a few players visible only upon very close inspection. Marked with raised letter stamp lower left corner and stamped on back by photographer Louis Van Oeyen. This team was assembled to play against Cleveland in a benefit game for the widow of former pitcher Addie Joss who had recently passed away from tubercular meningitis. The team is accepted by many historians to be the greatest All-Star assemblage to ever take the field with a total of seven Hall of Famers and several others who deserve to be in the Hall. Based upon the extreme rarity of this image it is assumed that these were presented to the members of the team as the only two other examples known were from Joe Wood (sold in 1998, see above) and Walter Johnson (documented to exist but location unknown). Truly a masterpiece taken by one of the finest photographers in baseball history of an All-Star team whose legend has grown to become one of the great events in Major League History. Matted and framed archivally: EX-MT (With note to restoration)
