Lot Number: 294

Description: Significant August 3, 1979 Eleanor Gehrig Western Union telegram sent to Diana Munson. Succinct one page original telegram of sympathy from Lou Gehrig's widow, Eleanor Gehrig, to Diana Munson. Simply, it reads, "My deepest sympathy and love to you and the children. Eleanor Gehrig". The meaning and heartfelt sentiment behind her words needs no explication. Thurman Munson embodied the spirit of Lou Gehrig, the "Pride of the Yankees", in the way he played, in the manner in which he lived his life, and in the importance of family. It is for those reasons, and so many others, that Munson was the first player bestowed with the title of "captain" since the great Lou Gehrig. Powerful and important historical document. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX-MT
