Lot Number: 745

Description: Rare Eddie Waitkus 1950 Phila. Phillies World Series home jersey with related items. Eddie Waitkus played for (11) seasons with the Chicago Cubs and Phila. Phillies. He was a fairly good first baseman who ended with a career .285 batting average. Although his baseball career was certainly respectable, Waitkus will be forever remembered by the nearly fatal shooting that occurred in 1949 by a deranged fan. Some 35 years later, the story of Eddie Waitkus would serve as the inspiration for one of the greatest baseball motion pictures ever made, "The Natural". Offered is a beautiful cream color flannel shirt with red pinstripes retaining its original embroidered "Phillies" team name across the front and "4" on the back. "Waitkus" is chain stitched on strip tag inside the collar, while tail front has Wilson tag with size 42 and dry clean tags. The shirt exhibits appropriate light to moderate use with some light age toning and a tiny hole on the back: EX-MT. The lot also includes a hand written letter signed by Waitkus with excellent content including a reference to his shooting; several 1949 Chic. Cubs vs. Philadelphia programs with Waitkus in the lineup; Eddie Waitkus model fielder's glove (block letter name stamping); vintage 8"x10" photo of Waitkus; vintage 8"x10" photo of Ruth Steinhagen (woman who shot Waitkus); (2) 1939 Phillies "movie" prop programs as used in "The Natural"; and a NY Knights vs. Phila. Phillies "prop" ticket stub from "The Natural". Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions, Inc. (uniform).
