Description: Significant Joe DiMaggio Presidential Medal of Freedom With Distinction. Joe DiMaggioÆs accomplishments on the baseball field are well documented and historic, but his accomplishments off the field are equally impressive and in many ways more significant. Just a few examples include voluntary enlistment in the U.S. Army during World War II at the height of his Major League career, traveling abroad to promote goodwill and spread the game of baseball to destinations such as Vietnam and Korea during wartime, and numerous charitable endeavors including the establishment of the Joe DiMaggio ChildrenÆs Hospital. Additionally, and quite possibly most importantly, he provided Americans with a positive influence during a bleak period in U.S. history. His hard work on the field was revered by all, while his virtue and professionalism off the field was similarly respected. On January 10, 1977, President Gerald Ford presented Joe DiMaggio with the highest American civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom With Distinction. The medal itself remains in its original lidded mahogany display case with ôJoseph DiMaggioö nameplate on the exterior lid positioned above the U.S. Presidential seal. Interior includes the enameled medal which is engraved on the reverse, ôPresidential Medal of Freedom Joseph Paul DiMaggio 1.10.77 D-56.ö The interior components also include a broad ribbon and three smaller appointments including a miniature medal with gold appurtenance. The original citation signed by President Ford as presented to DiMaggio is also included in its original leather folio. Joe DiMaggio earned dozens of awards during his storied life and career, but the offered medal quite possibly ranks as one of JoeÆs most significant accomplishments contributing to his legacy as an American icon. Includes several original related paper items and LOA from James Spence Authentication: EX
