Lot Number: 306

Description: Scarce "Shoeless" Joe Jackson autographed baseball bat c.1920's. Offered is a Johnny Mostil game used Louisville Slugger 125 model baseball bat measures 34 1/4" long and weighs 34.8oz. The bat exhibits heavy usage incl. barrel wear and a large handle crack which extends into the H&B trademark area. On the barrel of the bat under the "John Mostil" facsimile signature stamping is the autograph of teammate and acquaintance Joe Jackson. The black fountain pen signature is signed in Jackson's crude, drawn format remaining very dark and bold rating 8 out of 10. Mostil had played with Jackson at Winter ball in 1918 and then with the White Sox during the regular season. Although Mostil would play with the White Sox again from 1921-29, developing into a fine outfielder and batsman, his teammate would be banned from Major League baseball for life in 1920 after the events of the 1919 World Series. Authentic examples of Joe Jackson's signature are extraordinarily rare as he was semi-literate and often had his wife sign on his behalf. To our knowledge this is only one of two known Jackson autographed baseball bats extant, both of which were signed on the barrel area of a professional model bat and have direct provenance. Incredible rarity with relation to one of the most infamous names in American sports history. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication, LOA from PSA/DNA, LOA from Hunt Auctions, Inc., period image of Johnny Mostil, and a letter of provenance: Bat: VG-EX, Signature: EX-MT
