Description: Fine Christy Mathewson auto. photograph attributed to Carl Horner. Striking 3 7/8"x5 1/2" mounted studio portrait of Mathewson in New York Giants uniform which has been signed in black fountain pen, "To Mr. Peter Heim From Christy Mathewson Jan. 7, 1911". Salutation and signature have some variances in darkness with the signature itself among the strongest rating 6/7 out of 10. Small "C" copyright style symbol in the manner of other Horner images is visible at bottom right and photo remains mounted on an unmarked period mount. Mathewson continued his dominance in 1911 winning 26 games and completing 29 games en route to leading the New York Giants to the National League pennant. With respect to the early playing career dating, rarity and quality of the attributed Horner original image, and scarcity of Mathewson signed images due to his early death from tuberculosis, the offered example must be considered the finest Mathewson photograph to be offered at auction.
