Lot Number: 157

Description: Scarce Roberto Clemente 1958 Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey. Grey flannel vest style shirt with original black over gold "Pirates" team name on front and #21 on the back. MacGregor tag remains inside the collar and "Set 1 1958" flag tag is affixed inside of the shirt tail. Jersey exhibits evident usage including a few light stains and appropriate light wear to the piping in some areas. By 1958 Clemente was recognized as a rising star in the National League on both offense and defense. He would go on to finish his (18) year career with all round totals equaled by few players in Major League history including .317 lifetime batting average, 3000 hits (exactly), 12 straight Gold Glove awards, 11 All-Star appearances, 440 doubles, 1305 RBI's, and a fielding average of .973. As lofty as Clemente's baseball statistics were he was probably best known for his off the field humanitarian endeavors. On New Years Eve of 1972, Clemente died in a tragic plane crash while on his way to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The offered jersey is among the earliest playing career extant and to our knowledge the earliest to be sold at auction. Quite often, certain characteristics of modern players are compared with those of Clemente, but there have been no ball players since that have embodied his overall skill and quality as an individual. Includes LOA from SCD Authentic and LOA from Grey Flannel: EX-MT
