Description: Scarce 1949 Satchel Paige Cleveland Indians home jersey. One of the finest baseball HOF'er jerseys that we have had the privilege to offer. Stunning cream colored button down shirt with flannel sleeves and body strips surrounding a slightly lighter color "Palm Beach" style interior body fabric of a knit construction. Front of the shirt retains its original "Indians" team lettering across the chest and back has the original #29. Black horizontal MacGregor/Goldsmith tag remains inside the collar along with "Paige 29" chain stitched onto a strip tag. Inside the tail front is the "Set 1 1949" flag tag, original Indians logo patch is affixed to the left sleeve. Shirt remains in superb original condition with some very small moth holes on the back and some light age toning throughout. Matching pants were issued to teammate Al Clark and retain their orig. Wilson tag inside the waistband along with "Clark" chain stitched strip tag. Pants have some light usage wear and age toning remaining complete and intact. This monumental jersey was originally obtained by a Cleveland Indians scout Ernie Molnar who had befriended a Minor League player by the name of Ernie Chonko. During the 1950's era Molnar presented the Paige jersey, Clark pants, and some other cursory Indians items to Ernie Chonko as a token of their friendship. The jersey is being offered for the first time publicly and has remained in the Chonko family since it was received by Ernie. The greatness of Paige lies not only in his remarkable pitching career but also in his character as a man. It is a difficult task to find a former teammate or peer that had a negative word to say aboout Old Satch unless they were batting against him. Paige was signed by the Clev. Indians Bill Veeck in July of 1949 to the jeers of many who accused him of signing Paige as a gate attraction. Satchel went on to finish the year with a 6-1 record contributing to the Indians 1948 World Championship run. Fantastic rarity is one of only a few known authentic Paige jerseys extant. We are honored to announce that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this jersey will be donated to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Includes LOA from SCD Authentic D.Bushing-D.Knoll and letter of provenance from the nephew of Ernie Chonko: EX
